Well, faithful followers of "This week in Doom", here we are in the year 2016. As I have been doing for the majority of the history of Doom's existence, I will continue to bring you new doom wads, new reviews, updated news and much more. This particular page is my modest attempt to keep you abreast of all the current goings on in the Doom community - new Doom wads, new Doom 3 maps, updates on projects, Doom engines and more.        This Week in Doom: 01.31.16




The Week of Drama:

I thought I was not going to be able to do the article this week due to problems with my laptop, but I got my ole desktop up and running again so I won't miss a beat :)

I'm especially happy to do the article this week because a mapper that I look out for put out a map, so I'm really looking forward to playing it! But I can't stand to be cooped up in my room for long periods of time, so this is gonna be a quick one.



Rushing into the forums, we have 6 new wads coming in! Some of them have dates from last week, which boggles my mind because they weren't listed then, but that just means that it's good that I'm doing the article this week to make up for any perceived slack from last week. *looks around*

Starting with the oldest as always, we have "Atrocious" coming in from author roadworx, self-described as "shit" and found here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/Ports/a-c/atrocous.zip



Yay for including stuff for completion purposes! The text file only states that it was tested with GzDoom under the Doom 2 iWad.

I kid about only including it for completion purposes; this wad wasn't too bad for a first map. Some nice little detailing in there and at least it shows a nice attempt. Good job, man; keep at it!

Second in line is a wad called 2Zone by Jonas Lundin, found here:

I think this Deathmatch map runs in everything with Doom 2 as the iWad.

Not a bad little DM map, with 2 rooms separated by hallways that run around them, with little windows to jump out of for surprise attacks. Looks fun to me.

Third is "E1MOne" from author Gabriel Machado which can be found here:

The text file only says it was tested in zDoom under the Ultimate Doom iWad. Guess the level.

Not a bad first map. The author definitely understands PoV spots well and I love what I see when I first load up the map. There's a room with some goodies I'll get to later and there's the exit door. That's good stuff right there. I also liked the dark hallway, though it was a bit frustrating.

That said, there were many first-map tropes present here, including misaligned textures that didn't even make sense as to how they were misaligned in the first place, lol, but if you can get past that this was a fun, quick little map.

Always good to start off with small maps; so this guy's definitely on the right track!

This map only requires a limit-removing port with the Doom 2 iWad.



Yup, it's antares, so you know it looks good and is fun to play. I suppose the changed pistol is a common theme of birthday maps because I'm seeing a trend here. I miss Ole Useless, but hey, that's just me. This map was smaller than I expected at only 133 monsters, which is nice for my time because you know I had to make a blind FDA for this thing. Let's see how far I get...

Life is rough... no? 12:30 in and only 27 monsters to go; well you know I had to mess it up somewhere ;p

This map was just a ton of fun to play through; it's also non-linear and very well-balanced for it. Great job, once again antares! Download and play this map right away; I highly recommend it!

These Deathmatch maps run in Boom compatible ports with the Doom 2 iWad.



Oh man, I could go on for days about how great these maps look! They also look to flow well to me and I really want to DM on these some time! These guys did an excellent job here so show them some love with a download! There were also a lot of funny billboards throughout the maps; my favorite was one that said "Jack Nicholson: One Flew Over the Caco's Nest" and it had a picture of what looked like a laughing cacodemon as Jack's head. That cracked me up, lol, but a lot of the billboards were quite... punny.



As I said this thing was beautiful and there was a lot of awesome architectural work put into these bad boys, so it's definitely worth a download to kill your buddies on these maps.

And finally is a map titled "Rezulux's First Map" by (guess who) Rezulux and it can be found here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/Ports/p-r/rezu.zip



This map runs in GzDoom/Legacy with the Doom 2 iWad.

Rezulux made the Kyle Katarn addon for Samsara, which I thought was pretty cool.

This map wasn't bad for a first map, either. Some good little detailing in there and he got it right with the length of it. Still, some walls not tagged "lower unpegged" makes things seem a bit more ameturish, though over-all I liked it. No offense, man, but I hope your internet goes out more so you make some more of these and hopefully they get better over time :)

On the DoomWorld forums I found a few cool things this week:

First up, Eureka got an update! Eureka is a map editor and is great for what it does! Doom Builder is great; but it's not for everyone, so it's really cool to see other editors around so that people have a variety of good-quality editors to choose from, especially with all of the different set-ups for computers that are out there. GeckoYamori made his first map this week, figured I'd give it a check. Since this seems to be a week of first maps, screw it; it's now in the article, heh. The name of the map is "Phobos Facility" and the thread can be found here:

This is definitely one of the better first-maps that I've played. There were still some things that I just don't understand how they were missed, but for the most part the level didn't look that bad. It really just needs a couple extra layers of detail added to things (like architecture splitting up large sections of walls/separating windows, for example), but if you don't mind the 90's look to it this is a fun play! It runs in Boom with the Ultimate Doom iWad, but there's really no reason this couldn't have been vanilla >.< Still, check this out when you can and show Gecko some love (or hate, whatever; I'm sure he'd appreciate all feedback ;p ).

rf` released a new megawad on the DoomWorld forums based on the supposed 1024 madness; it's called "rf1024." These maps were one Hell of a challenge but the changes to the weapons made them much easier. The PLAYPAL of this thing was very pretty, too, as was detailing throughout.



This thing runs in zDoom, which is a major shame because I'd love to see some demos for it, with the Doom 2 iWad.



This megawad was absolutely gorgeous, as I stated before. I had a very tough time deciding what screenshots would make it into this article, but these were my favorites! This megawad had a couple custom bosses and new (but really just faster) weapons, which made my attempts to speedrun these things a blast (and almost work, heh). I went way over my time on this one because I just had to play every level; it was that good. The 1024 in the title refers to the overall size of the map area, which means that these maps are fairly small, though they do pack one Hell of a punch! I highly encourage everyone to try this baby out because this thing might be Cacoward material!

One Man Doom has 3 new reviews up!

I think that whole project was a really cool idea and from Skillsaw, you know it's a good map! Check out the review right away, then check out the map itself!

New mod out for Doom 3! It's called "Doom 3 Splitscreen Edition" and you can guess what it does. It also "features nearly infinite ammo, friendly fire, drop weapons, teleport and more" and was created by adolif. Give this thing a try with a buddy today!
