Well, faithful followers of "This week in Doom", here we are in the year 2016. As I have been doing for the majority of the history of Doom's existence, I will continue to bring you new doom wads, new reviews, updated news and much more. This particular page is my modest attempt to keep you abreast of all the current goings on in the Doom community - new Doom wads, new Doom 3 maps, updates on projects, Doom engines and more. Enjoy and Keep on Dooming!

==========================================================================================

Thanks to "Fonze" for taking up the mantle of responsibility for TWID and doing the research and writing up TWID for us. Also, Thanks to you, the reader(s), and Community, which have kept Doom alive and relevant for all these years. And, thanks to ID Software, without whom, all this could not be possible. Keep on Dooming!

       This Week in Doom: 01.17.16

This Week in Doom: Jan 17, 2016

This week has been a very special week in Doom! As many of you have seen, John Romero released a new level on the 15th; a new interpretation of E1M8 of the first Doom. Good God Mr. Romero; what a level! I ragequit on 2 separate occasions before finally getting down to business and actually finishing this beast of a map. That was one Hell of a tough map to start! But oh boy was it just a ton of fun and pretty to boot!

This map runs in limit-removing formats under the Ultimate Doom iWad; map slot E1M8.

This is a must-play for every Doom'er so if you haven't played it already go give it a shot right now! I mean it; quit your job, go home, crack open a brew because even though it's only 11 AM you're unemployed now so that's really a non-issue at this point and play this map!

===============================================================================================================

Also, starting on Good old Doom Wad Station, we have this review of Luducrium by Blue Paladin.

On the archives we have 6 new submissions coming in this week, plus one that I somehow missed from last week.

This map is called "Mars City Cleanup" by Ron and the A and is found here:

http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/Ports/m-o/marsclea.zip

Apparently I didn't miss much last week, this wad lets the player kill 4 zombiemen, 1 shotgunner and 1 chaingunner before cutting to a cutscene that ends the map (and repeats it; oh joy!). Upon closer inspection, behind the 3 key doors are a ton of archviles apparently only there for cheaters as there is not enough health or ammo (or any, for that matter) in this map to support it, never mind that the keys are also not present. Should you be daring enough to IDCLIP behind the cutscene-line, there's a mob of revenants waiting to be apparently punched, or cheated through; whatever this map was stupid.

Run it in zDoom with the Doom 2 iWad to go [insert over-used anime word here] on somebody named Billtler, or something like that... Idk. This could have been better if it were longer.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Up next is a wad called "Big Circular Room with Cybie" by Topi Hattukangas, found here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom/Ports/a-c/bcrwcd.zip

The text file doesn't state an advanced engine required, but I ran it just fine in PrBoom+ under the Ultimate Doom iWad in map slot E2M8.

This map was kinda cool, in its own way. The SM had no purpose being there and his room was just ugly and contained a HoM, but aside from that the rest of this map was fun to play and even funner to attempt all 100%'s. Give this short, small map a go.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In the third slot we have a mod coming in called "Guns Akimbo!" by TomoAlien. Find it here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/combos/akimbo.zip

This mod runs in zDoom and is pretty fun to play with. It basically makes every gun (but the chainsaw) dual-wielded with 2 different attacks for each, though most wind up appearing to be not much different. Still, ton of fun to play with. Give this mod a try today!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Next up is a Dannebubinga & Ribbiks(!) mapset called "Italo-Doom" and is found here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/Ports/megawads/italo.zip

HRRGGG... RAGE... QUIT...

Omfg as soon as you open the first level of this wad it's pretty clear that the rage is only beginning. I tried every level and ragequit every one. One map had 13 enemies and I thought "oh, this'll be nice" but you can guess how that went. This wad is a masochist's dream, assuming they're only seeking mental (and pride-related) trauma. Still, they we're a nice-looking set of 20 maps, so given that, I'll just have to quote Anthony Kiedis and say "I like pleasure spiked with pain..." And if this wad were an aeroplane I'd jump out and take my chances with the ground. I kid, of course; I crave the punishment.

Run this Devil of a wad in Boom with Doom 2 and get that cocktail ready for the final flight of the mothership.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our fourth wad this week is called "Spicy Evil Spaghetti" by Thales "Noiser" Lari which can be found here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/Ports/s-u/spagheti.zip

This wad already has me hungry just by the name. You see, I have an eating disorder... and it's called Italian. I'd eat this wad if I hadn't paid an arm for the laptop that it seems to be inside (how'd they do that?).

This wad was as fun as it was funny, which for me, was a good amount of both. Whether it is or isn't a joke wad is irrelevant, this thing was sweet! Remember to eat your meatballs :)

Feels like home :)

Run this wad o' noodles in zDoom with the Doom 2 iWad and get your double-barreled forks ready!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Coming in the fifth slot is the next installment to the Abyssal Speedmapping Sessions. This time it's session 25 and once again it's headed by TheMionicDonut for the first session and Jimmy for the second. Check it out here: http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom2/Ports/a-c/abyspe25.zip

For those who don't know, the Abyssal Speedmapping Sessions are held at two different portions of a particular day, set up in advance. In each session, members get together on a common Skype call and talk about their nails while they build these awesome maps in the timespan of 3 hours for each session. It's a wonder that these maps turn out as well as they do but that just goes to show the skill of these talented mappers. Every session has it's themes/rules that the mappers try to follow... Apparently this session's themes were "blue," "moving floors," and "inconveniently-placed barrels."

These maps were a ton of fun to play and had some good laughs thrown in there, too. Great job, once again, guys! Run this baby in Boom with Doom 2.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

And finally, to round everything out we are gifted with the name of Mr. Romero's creation and it's awaited release to /idgames! That's really sweet! The name of the map is "Tech Gone Bad" and it can be found here:

 http://www.doomwadstation.net/idgames/doom/Ports/d-f/e1m8b.zip

This thing is a lot of fun to play and given the amount of times you've killed his impaled head you owe it to him to check it out; so give it a shot right away!

This thing runs in limit-removing formats under the Doom 1 iWad on the E1M8 map. Great job, once again Mr. Romero; great to have you back!

What a great week for /idgames! Let's check the forums...

===============================================================================================================

On the DoomWorld forums there are a few really sweet wads to see.

First up is one that came in over the break that I forgot to mention last week. It's called "Darkmoon" by DMPhobos and Z0k and it's an absolute beauty!

Darkmoon is very much like a "Doom 3 in Doom 2" kind of thing, with the setting a reimagining of "The Shores of Hell." So far, there are only 2 maps available for play, as this is a WIP, but they are a lot of fun and definitely worth a shot! This awesome project needs more feedback as well, so give these guys a hand and have some fun at the same time. Keep your eyes on this for sure! Use GzDoom with the Doom 2 iWad.
https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/85269-darkmoon-looking-for-feedback-and-testers/

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ed released a hi-res texture pack for GzDoom here: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/85534-ed-c-texture-pack-v1/

These things look beautiful and are definitely gonna see some use in the near future! Go check them out right away! Thanks for these textures for the community, Ed, and great job on these!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sergeant Mark IV released a new Ketchup mod. Ketchup adds all the gore with none of the gameplay changes, which is nice for preserving that Vanilla-esk gameplay. It looks fantastic and I highly recommend it to everyone! You need GzDoom or Zandronum to run this mod.

Check it out here: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/85534-ed-c-texture-pack-v1/

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Over on the zDoom forums there's a sweet new monster randomizer mod from DoomKrakken, found here: http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=49524&sid=d9736ae2af48f1ad3dac99482ba775f3

This one looks pretty sweet and reviews are positive, so give it a shot when you can!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Nash on the zDoom forums has finally finished work on a "Real-time day/night and weather engine." Only thing left is preparing a few last-minute things. This thing looks awesome. Keep your eye out for its release very soon!

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=46799&start=75

===============================================================================================================

One Man Doom has 3 new reviews up! That's really sweet.

The first is of Khorus' map "The Warlock's Hearth" which I had the pleasure of playing when it came out on /idgames. The map was a ton of fun and KMX E XII's review is a good read. Check it out:

http://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-warlocks-hearth-warlhwad.html

The second is a franckFRAG map titled "Plutocracy." I haven't played this map yet but franckFRAG makes some tough, beautiful maps that make for some fun demo recordings (Swift Death comes to mind). So check out KMX's review right away, then try out the map!
http://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2016/01/plutocracy-plutcywad.html

The final review is of a 36-map megawad by Impie, titled "Strange Aeons." Impie makes some awesome maps so this thing will definitely be on my play list for the next few days; add it to yours! Read the review here: http://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2016/01/strange-aeons-strangeaeonspk3.html#more

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wads In Progress has 3 new wads up; check them out here: http://wadsinprogress.info/?a=listwads&game=&status=&mode=

frankFRAG seems to be working on a new beast...

===============================================================================================================

Romero's new map has a few demos rolling in; check them out here: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1544945

I love seeing these things so keep 'em rolling in!

===============================================================================================================

Doom 3 is quiet again, but that's not so bad with Doom Reborn's newest update still being fresh! More time for that!

A big thanks to everyone in the community that keeps the spirit of Doom alive and kicking, even 22 years later! Big thanks also to Mr. Romero for making a new map for us to have fun with and for the promise of more to come! Take care until next time, folks!
