So, There were seven - yes, countem, SEVEN new wads uploaded to
the archives this week. I am hoping this week breaks what has
been at least a 2 - 3 week losing streak of unremarkable to
outright really poorly done maps plus the usual terry and joke
wads. As I write this, I haven't had the opportunity to look at
any of the new entrants to the archives so All I can say is that
I hope with every fiber of my being that someone put SOMETHING
worthy of a players time on the archives this week. We
will discover that together. Also, of course, is other news from
around the community including a new release by Zorah
(more on that in awhile) and the usual playthroughs for
those who enjoy them plus any other news I could glean from the
various highways and byways that intersect and create the Doom
community.
P.S. All of the maps are direct linked in my personal back up
of the archives along with GOD KNOWS how many others for Doom,
Doom2, Doom3, ROE, Wolfenstein 3D, Castle Wolfenstein, Duke 3d,
Strife, Hexen, Heretic and more
here
=============================================================================
In the hopes that moving the archive selections back to the
top of TWID this week will bring some good fortune and
some good maps for our collective enjoyment - that is where
I will begin this week. With that in mind, I will begin with the
lone megawad to be uploaded over the last week.
This megawad, by Josh Sealy with Guest Mapper
Darkwave0000 is called
RESURGENCE (Final Ver.)
and can be found along with all the other
megawads in the
Doom2/Ports/Megawads.
According to the author it should play with
any Boom compatible port. I decided on Risen3d
Thankfully, I was NOT disappointed. I only
got a brief look (this takes hours as it is) and what I saw
looked good but also very difficult on UV so don't expect
and easy play! Also, as you can see, there seems to be a common
theme at the beginning - but FINALLY, something that looks like
it's worth playing!

========================================================================================
Our second wad of the day is called
#DooM Speedmapping Session 1 and can be found along with
tons of other maps in
Doom2/ports/G-I. Based on the following excerpt from the
text file, I'll allow you to decide on the quality of the
various maps contained within the zip file since it is bound to
vary. You can check out the rest of the texf file
here.
12 maps made during the first session,
some by
first-time mappers. There were two theme
options: "Cyberdemon" and "Water & Lava".
Of course, being a first time mapper doesn't necessarily
equate to "bad mapper". But it usually means that you are rough
around the edges and still need to learn the craft of creating
exciting gameplay, decent level design, etc...
Here are a couple of screenies for you, chosen at random
(before loading it). Map 5 and Map 8 and I can tell you after
having a quick gander at a few of the maps - be prepared to get
your ass kicked. The very first map you materialize and you're
surrounded by imps, etc... and a Cyberdemon is standing
about 30 feet away and looking right at you. Good luck.
See that Revenant? There's one on the left as well - I
wouldn't waste any time in this room!

This "could" be fun. You'll have to play to find out!

=======================================================================================
So, that leads us to DOOR NUMBER "3" which is
Hell Temple 8. which, like it's predecessor on this list can
be found in
Doom2/ports/G-I. I guess all the questions weren't
answered in the first 7? /shrug. I know I have absolutely
been on the edge of my seat waiting for the sequel! Lol.
From the txt file:
A long level with multiple paths and
many discreet, difficult encounters. This level was made to be
played with the Brutal Doom mod
I have to admit, the author had me at Brutal Doom Mod. Let's
get a quick peek, shall we?

Yes, I know - Where are the enemies? No worries! No spoilers!
They ARE in there. lol
=======================================================================================
Well, so far, it's been a banner day, although, I have to
say that by the looks of it that 12 map speedmapping release
looks like it's going to throw people fits.
Next up is a single player map for Doom 2 called
Impure Offering that requires cc4-tex.wad to play. It says
it will play with any Boom compatible port. Let's find out. So,
I opened this one up with Zdoom. Looks like people are going to
have their hands full.
Here's a couple of screenies to whet your appetite:

The "fierce difficulty" aspect certainly
is in
evidence in the final product, though. Skill
levels have been implemented -- HMP is akin to the earlier parts
of Scythe's third episode on UV, and keeps the overall pressure
mostly intact, with its main concessions being the removal of
some of the most troublesome individuals. HNTR is more of a
"traditional run-n-gun UV" experience.Impure Offering on UV is
intended to be a real challenge, and should shed some blood from
even
the most skilled Doomers.
=========================================================================
We
still have lots to get through, so moving on....
This one is called simply,
Nihilo and offers a really brief description -
A hell themed map for Doom2. You can look for
other maps in the
doom2/ports/m-o here.
This one requires Zdoom to play.

A quick playthrough of the map leaves me with the
impression that the design is basic but the author made sure to
cross all his T's and dot all his I's. Gameplay wise, at least
at the beginning, it is deceptively difficult because he uses
transporters to good effect along with a dearth of ammunition,
forcing you to be cautious with what you have. Enjoy!
=================================================================================
So, so far, not a bad haul by the looks of it. The next one
is called
Pepsi, and I have to be honest, reading this text file gives
me a little pause but I have to at least give it a fair shot....
Title : Pepsi
Filename : pepsi.wad
Release date : 9/21/14
Author : Canofbacon
Email Address : canofbacon@yahoo.com
Other Files By Author : savetw.wad alpaca.wad america.wad
kdim01.pk3
kdim02.wad hikitty.wad
Misc. Author Info : I made WADs that nobody likes. And I added
difficulty settings to this WAD, so nobody better
complain about it being to hard like they did
with Hello Kitty. I recommend playing this on
Hurt Me Plenty.
Description : DESTROY COCA-COLA. #PEPSIWINS. In this WAD you
bust into a building and kill a bunch of dudes
that like coca-cola.
I have to admit. Just from the beginning (which is all I had
time to look at), my initial impression (based on the name and
the description) appears to have been off the mark. I think this
one is going to be fun AND difficult!

Yes, I know, it doesn't look like alot at first but I thought
the scrolling Hitler picture was a nice touch and you will see
more action, shortly.
=================================================================================
Finally, we
UACDOOM (which, honestly I'm shocked nobody ever used
before). The author states this is his first map so I'm at least
interested to see if he's spent any time honing the craft or if
he just kind of jumped in and threw his first creation on the
archives....
I figured I'd give this one a whirl in Risen3d since unlike
the last 2 or 3, this one isn't specifically for Zdoom. Why
don't more people design for Risen3d anyway? That is an
AMAZING looking port.
As you'll be able to ascertain from these screenshots, I
received pretty much what I expected. A first map. Yes, it's
bland in design and there is alot to be desired in the gameplay
department but the author figured out how to make a map without
having horrible texture alignmentor hom's and such...

==============================================================================
I
wanted to give a special mention to Zora's new release on
zorasoft of his updated doomzone mod, which is an awesome mod
that changes weapons, etc... and also adds player classes and
more. Don't waste any time checking that out!

==============================================================================
Starting my roundup of new stuff that I found on various
sites around the internet, I decided to start with the
Zdoom forums this week where I found a release called:
Gene Tech: Before the Storme. It is a rather large
download at 90 megs but I thought I'd take a quick look. Also, I
had to download the
1.9 version alpha
of GZDOOM to get it to play but I have to say - based
on first impressions - I have to review this - it definitely
deserves a deeper look.

Over on
the Doomworld forums, Sincity2100 has put out an announcement
on the mods and wads section looking for some mappers. If you're
interested, you can check out the thread
here.
Here's the
details:
I wanna make a Doom Project and I want people to join in, and I
made two maps for the project seprerately for it so I want you
to check it out
So I made some rules out there:
1-This one is a boom Compatible so you can do whatever you
like,no ZDoom stuff please
2-This gonna be a classic doomwad with good difficulty
3-Slaughter maps are allowed, but don't throw me a Hell Revealed
difficulty,it will be rejected.
4-You can upload maps from somall to Normal to Large Maps, don't
make some type of a "City of the Unavanged" map where you make a
city map and make it a maze.
5-Don't pour a lot of Huge maps that makes me go to the other
side of the world where I can get lost please, just upload a
variations of mapset with different sizes please
6-the CC4 texture pack will be allowed in this one,and here's
the download link grandvoid.sickedwick.net/wads/cc4-tex.zip
Mapping Guidelines:
You can upload any type of maps you want, but I'll put some
deadlocks in it
Map 1 will be the start of the map,so I want a classic short map
(don't want Long map1 maps)
Map 15 will off course have the secret exit
Map 30 will be the final Boss
The Episodes
Map 1-11 will be the techbase map
Map 12-20 will be a techbase with a little Hellish maps
Map 21-30 will be a Hellish mapset with some techbase maps
Map 31 will be a map with Zombies only
Map 32, Get the TNT textures with you on this one because it's
gonna be a mixture of TNT Evilution+Plutonia map
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over at
One Man Doom,
there was a new review for
The Adventures of Square.
From the
review:
Every now and then, someone uses the Doom engine
to craft what is for all intents and purposes a brand new game.Heretic was
the original, but then you got your Chex
Quest,
your Harmony,
your Action
Doom II...
and now, The
Adventures of Square.
Jimmy had a vision, a vision of a plucky cigar-chewing square
that fought the evil circles of Shapeland with gratuitous paint
guns

Looks interesting. Definitely give that a look.
=============================================================
Going over to
Realm667 which has had
more than it's fair share of issues with hackers. it would
appear that those issues have forced his hosting company
to force that website to upgrade/move/or die. It looks
like the donations rolled in and a new web design will be
implemented on a more secure platform. They already seem to have
all the donations that are needed but speaking for a site that
requests, and rarely gets, donation, I'm sure he can use all the
help he can get.
=======================================================================================
So, here I am - 4 hours after I started putting this
together and we're down to the final section -
the Playthroughs I found while perusing
/r/doom on reddit.com.
First up, from a regular in this section - Brutal
Video Vauld, we have
Cinnamon
Cherry Base, MAP04.
Also from Brutal Video Vault - Doom WAD Playthrough -
Knee Deep
in Hell, E2M5
Moving on, George Merlocco brings us
DooM - 4K Resolution Sample A, which was
interesting, to say the least.
DoommaN this week bring us this little ditty -
Obituary!
Cyberdemon, another regular and probably well known to man who
like the playthroughs, comes up with this playthrough of a
scythe map -
Doom:
Scythe MAP07: "Deadly" UV Tyson in 1:20
Rounding it out, Kotsugi brings us this playthrough:
[Doom 2] Jenesis Map 19: Subterranean Labs (UV-Max 7:23)
