So, This Week in Doom has been on hiatus for well, almost a year
but thanks to a kind soul from the community who contacted me
and expressed an interest in resurrecting her (thanks
This week in Doom is now back. so now, here you go, it's all him
from here on out.....
Over the last couple weeks there has been tons happening in the
Doom community! For starters, there were 10 files uploaded to /idgames
since the 13th, plus many more awesome projects in the works
elsewhere. So let's start with the files uploaded to /idgames
and work from there.
So now, at least you'll see a warning about a file that
is an obvious Terry wad - and you won't waste your time
downloading it. Maybe this will encourage these assholes to
find something else to do but then again, it just might
encourage them to create even MORE crap and keep putting it
on the archives because now they've drawn some attention.
Starting with the oldest, we have a map
coming in called "The Gap" by author Skumball, which can be
Not much info on this map, but the author says he tested it
in Zand. with Brutal Doom. I played it in zDoom with the
Doom 2 iWad.
This map features a gap, with water that functions like a
floor at the bottom. It also has 31 monsters. Starting it up
we see a lot of square architecture and in all fairness it
looks boring at first, but with 31 monsters, why not? I gave
this one a shot and I must say it was a lot of fun and
intricately designed, with paths opening up around the gap,
yet all leading back to square one, heh. Definitely give
this nice, short map a go right away!
Next up we have a megawad coming in from author Alexander
"Eternal" S. called "ICAR2015" found here:
The text file states that "all levels are designed for
vanilla Doom2 + Icarus.wad" and recommends PrBoom+ (-complevel
These maps were pretty fun to play, with many varied types
of encounters thrown in. A few tough, small-scale fights, a
few slaughterfests, and maybe even a teleporting monster or
three. Great set of maps and highly recommended from me!
The next one on the list has comments saying its a troll
wad, so let's move on.
Our next two submissions come from Jmickle66666666! Great
First we have a texture pack called Aquatex3. Lotta cool
textures in there. Give it a check!
Second we have a map. A small map, but a fun one. Small maps
are nice because they don't take too long to play. They are
also a let-down when they turn out to be really fun, like
this one was. With 12 monsters I'd have to say that nobody
can be too busy for this gem of a map. Did I mention it's
The map is titled "Mondrigan" and can be found here:
The author says it works in PrBoom+ with the Plutonia (!)
iWad. Nice change to see maps using Final Doom textures.
Check this one out for sure!
Up next we have another couple of submissions by the same
person: Glenzinho (Anybody remember Firetop Mountain?)
The first set of maps are Glen's old maps, some of which
first maps. Quite frankly, they feel that way. All designed
for Ult. Doom so that meant Simpson Doom time for me. Here's
the coolest-looking screenshot of the bunch:
They can be found here:
Glen's other submission was more along the lines of what I
expected to see. Couple of fun maps to play with. Author
recommends zDoom 2.7.1, Doom 2 iWad, and the map requires
the CC4 texture pack (!). The second map has 66 enemies in
it which is a decent ammount, but also features something
that just became my favorite feature ever: a
revenant-creation button. I have no idea why it's there, but
it is, so kudos, sir, to an excellent trap/fun-button on a
level with very little ammo!
It can be found here:
Next up was a first map. Good luck to the author and keep on
trying man, every map gets better and easier to make :)
Following that we have an interesting one coming at us with
vanilla gameplay! This one's designed for Doom 2 under the
MAP14 slot and is called "Flesh Factory" by Damson and can
be found here:
This map has some cool visuals and decent design for a
vanilla map, but lost me with its strange thing placement.
Stuff like opening a door and seeing 4 or 5 bulls in front
of you closely packed in as well as fairly long shotgun
gameplay with HK's, cacos, bulls, and even a couple barons
popping up before finally getting to the SSG and RL. Worth a
shot if you are looking for a vanilla map, though.
And finally, we have a submission by Doomkid called "Point
of Contention"vwhich can be found here:
Man this map looks like it'd be a fun, frantic 1-on-1
deathmatch map and aesthetically awesome to boot. Deathmatch
fans will absolutely love this, so download it right away!
So that wraps it up for the
portion, let's take a look around the community.
Over at One Man Doom we have a nice review of "50 Shades
of Graytall" here:
those who haven't played it yet, it's a bit psychadelic with its
texture use, only DOORTRAK, GRAYTALL, and FIREBLU were used to
make this, but it has some submissions by some very
well-established mappers and is a solid mapset worth playing
once, then taking a cold shower telling yourself it never
happened. Then relapsing and playing it again.
Over at Wads In Progress we have an upcoming wad called "Lich
Haven" which looks pretty sweet. Looking forward to hearing more
from it! It can be found here:
At Realm667 there is a short article on an upcoming megawad that
I happen to be a small part of: "Mutiny." Thanks to Tormentor667
for the shout-out! One of the wads main focuses is stunning
visuals achieved through interesting architecture and beautifly
contrasting colors. A couple maps are already finished and
awaiting review, so check those out! But first, head on over to
Realm667 and see what else they're cooking!

Here's the link to the dev thread:
Over at Game Watcher we have a "Doom 3 BFG Hi Def 2.3 patch"
coming in from y2keeth, found here:
Looks good man!
Slade released a new patch here:
If you haven't updated make sure you do so! This comes with a
few bug fixes and a couple additions. Looking forward to 3.1.1
The ZDaemon website offers us a nice mapset called "NewGothic
Movement 1" by ArmouredBlood and is found here:
These look like a fun set of maps to play with some friends over
a couple (cases of) brews.
And finally, to round things out we have 5 reviews coming in
First we have a review from Blue Paladin of a map titled
"Oblivion" by Stormwalker a.k.a. Vordakk found here:
Second we have a review by Cupcakes of a map called 1 on 1 by
author Rob (Cisco) Sarsorito found here:
