Overview Opening screenshot
Welcome to the jungle! You start off at a Helicopter pad with a shotgun, pistol and some health. You have Two objectives, destroy some barrels and kill some prisoners. Shortly after leaving that area you're put into your first room, a mostly open jungle floor with imps and former humans. On harder difficulties make sure you watch that ammo! In this action packed map you must go through a believe it or not, foggy jungle. At least that's part of the ride. Get yourself ready for a fun, well designed, challenging and atmospheric ride. It's a short one, but damned if it isn't memorable.
Design
I don't want to give too much away, because I think the level design is the best part. But shortly after your first encounter you discover the picture above. Lava draining into a river with Pinkies at the bottom? The environmental storytelling lets you know that something weird is going on here. Once you’re greeted with a big lab door you kind of know what’s going on. Venturing inside and laying your eyes upon the hostile chaos tells you everything you need to know. Another R&D company trying to play god. Your mission becomes clear. Kill. Them. All.
Gameplay
Think classic Doom gameplay. Look for them keys! It doesn’t feel forced either. It feels as though naturally exploring the lab nets you they keys you need. The lab is also choc-full-o’ baddies. Weapons are given to you as you play, heavier weapons you need to secret hunt. I haven’t even found them all, but the ones I did find didn’t seem to out of the way. The latter half of this map gets a bit more difficult, but nothing felt unfair. There really isn’t much else to say about this maps gameplay. It feels like a very honest doom map.
Ooh boy, not every map or map pack you play sticks with you, and to some who have played an overwhelming amount of maps, this might blend in with all the other “lab gone wrong” type maps. To me this map stands next to the original doom 1 or 2 maps. While they aren’t huge, complex maps. They’re smaller, bite sized challenges one can overtime learn to perfect. Playing Foggy Jungle is a quick treat you should not let yourself miss!
