Xenomorph Hive
is a single level replacement for GZDoom by Kontra Kommando.
Being an Aliens themed mod, you'd better bring a shitload of
grenades... You're gonna need 'em.
Difficulty: 8
Following Starship Konrad, Xenomorph Hive pits you against a
battle against the Xenomorph Queen in (you guessed it) the hive.
Man, is this thing huge! And no matter what you put into it, the
damn thing keeps coming! Your first task is gonna have to be
grab that rifle and RUN. Put some space between you and the
Queen.
Throughout the map, there are several dozens of xenomorph drones
and face huggers. Taking on the Queen with all these bastards
swarming you (Hey, this is their territory. What are you, some
kinda human?) is not gonna end well. But, once you trash the
extraterrestrial denizens of the hive, it's easy pickings on the
Queen, provided you have enough space between you and it. Once
you get it into a loop of following you around the hive over and
over, you can backpedal and fire to your heart's content.
Just don't let it get too close to you. That is, unless you like
having your spine crushed in one hit. You're gonna need more
than a chiropractor to fix that.
Design: 9
I almost gave this category a perfect ten. The hive is
completely otherworldly. Corridors appear to be lined with
asphalt, fog obscures your view of what beasts hide in the
corners, and jeez, that music! You really feel like you're in a
last ditch battle against something you stand almost no chance
of defeating.
The only reason this got a 9 is because I saw a HOM effect
around some rubble in one of the corners of the map. I thought
it was like a skylight or something, but upon further
inspection, it turned out I was wrong. Regardless, it's
something so obscure, you might not even notice it.
Playability: 8
Being a fast paced and challenging mod, you may initially have
some problems getting moving. Hell, I'll just come out and say
it. You probably aren't going to beat this your first time
playing. But, it's okay. Challenging mods generally don't want
you to beat them.
That aside, there really isn't much of a reason as to why you
shouldn't pick this up and have fun with it almost immediately.
Overall (Not an Average): 8
I almost didn't think I was going to finish this one. Even if I
hadn't, I would still recommend this. It's just that damn fun.
Get it, you won't be disappointed.
And if you are, I'll just elevate your name to the top of the
Xenomorph Queen's sh*tlist.
