Smothered Hope wad by Ed C. for Doom II, map 01

            This is a more traditional Doom style map using the textures from the original wad with new music added.  It was made using Doombuilder, a rather robust editor. I've used it a few times myself before going to DeepSea, and I liked it.

            The action starts off pretty fast here;

you are facing some high level baddies off the bat with just a 12 gauge and a prayer.  Lots of trick doors, teleports, and ambush points.  One was an ambush in a hallway leading to another part of the map and I ran out just as the first ten fireballs were crashing into the nearby wall.  Lots of spots to run and gun, and to snipe (my fav tactic).  The switches were spread out a bit and took time to find out what they triggered; meaning you will be going back and forth a bit figuring things out.

            Supplies were rationed out fairly and I found restocks just as I ran low.  The baddies are numerous and, as I've written earlier, you will get bum-rushed by Revies, Archies, and cornered by a Cybie even.  It's a challenging map and is sure to entertain you.  It will also solicit choice cuss words every now and again.

            The design was well done, though not overly original in scope.  It's chuck full of snipe points for the Chaingun Dudes and Imps, some secrets, and not cluttered or cramped.  Textures were fitted well and the theme was consistent.  All the usual Doom tricks and traps are included.  All you vets out there will outwit the ambushes, but the action is hot and heavy.  You like this one.
