THE REVIEW: (By Blue Paladin)

TIME WASTED: 25 minutes

DESIGN: 9.5

This is just one RIDICULOUS map for Doom II (map01). There are only three baddies; three of them. And, they are UBER bosses! One was this souped up version of a Burning Soul that was fast, seemed to move thru walls, and exploded upon impact. Upon which, you die. Period. There is no warning, no growling, not a damned thing. Just, “boom” and you die.

Then, there was the Hellion; a souped up version of the ArchVile that is VERY fast, sprays a shit load of fireballs, and can fry you within one attack. He got me dead the most times, but I corralled him into a room and sprayed his rancid ass with the chaingun and down he went.

The third guy, didn’t get its name, is a ghost. You will NOT see him until he’s on you, then you have two seconds to frag him before you’re processed meat. Like the Burning Soul mod, he has no warning growl, no sound…only the sound of him ripping into your back!

I spent the majority of the twenty or so odd minutes of my game, cowered into a corner, looking for these little fuckers that kept ghosting me without my seeing them. The Hellion is the worst of the three; he zips to and fro, blinks in and out of sight, and ambushes you with fireballs. The map is very small, with tight corners, and is very, VERY dark. I really liked the textures that were used (what little I could see in the dark), and the design was clean and tight. This is an ambushers’ dream (or nitemare); lots of places where these three bosses can pounce on you without warning, and I emphasize WITHOUT WARNING. Be prepared to get shredded multiple times as you figure out how to take out the baddies. Killing all three ends the map, so forget about looking for switches and keys. Just get some ammo and start hunting, or wait for them to find you and go at it (good luck wit that).

What I did was keep moving; that’s it. Jumping is also part of the map, though I don’t like jumping in Doom; it kind of takes away the surprise element for me. But, you don’t have to use that feature to finish.

You even have the option for ‘+50% ammo’ at the level start screen…not that it freakin’ matters. Also, the NightMare difficulty has been humorously replaced by ‘Mein Leiben’! Aside from the easier difficulty, the other three settings are SICK. Mein Lieben is sadistic!

I really enjoyed this map. You could always play thru again to find new ways of surviving, but it was a once and done thing for me. You will have a blast with this one!
