this week in doom is my attempt at keeping you abreast of all the goings  on in the DOOM community and, as you will notice, a busy community it is. It's difficult to believe that after 20 plus years this game's community is still as active as it is but, of course, ID Software has helped by releasing Doom 3 10 years ago (or thereabouts) and is now in the process of the new DOOM game (sometime in Q2, 2016?). Can't wait  to see the beta shareware, or whatever it's  going to be.....

Thanks to "Fonze" for taking up the mantle of responsibility for TWID and doing the research and writing up TWID for us. Also, Thanks to you, the reader(s), and Community, which have kept Doom alive and relevant for all these years. And, thanks to ID Software, without whom, all this could not be possible. Keep on Dooming!

We have a whopping 10 maps coming in from /idgames, so let's get to it!

From Rayzik we have a couple Birthday Speedmap collections. They feel like pretty standard speedmaps to me, but if that's up your alley you'll enjoy these two sets:

Doom 2 iWad, Boom compatible

Up next we have Chris Hansen coming in with a collection of Shores of Hell themed maps from his mapping career.

Ultimate Doom iWad, Episode 2, limit removing format.

For those who haven't played a map from Chris, you're missing out on some good stuff, so get these maps today!

Our next map comes to us from Chainguner and has the very descriptive name of "Chainguner's Wad Pack."

These maps got some cool looking spots and are in Boom format; Doom 2 iWad.

After that we have 5, count 'em, five, things coming to us from Memfis called "Nazi Camp," "Demon Prince Sings the Blues," "Back to Square One," "Refill," and "Disaster!"

These all run on the Doom 2 iWad and all but the "Nazi Camp" run on prboom-plus -complevel 2. The "Nazi Camp" wad is prboom-plus -complevel 9.

These are some good maps! I particularly enjoyed the puzzles of "Back to Square One," as well as some of the music choices, like a bit of Led Zeppelin thrown in there. Good stuff!

Our last submission from the archives is called "Curse of Blood" from Matias Johansson.

Doom 2 iWad, PrBoom+ compatible

These maps are pretty interesting and have some cool looking stuff going on. Try them out and see what you think!

Over on the DoomWorld forums we have a few good, recent submissions coming in:

First up we have a map called "Lantern Bridge" by Obake which can be found here:

It requires all three wads to run and runs on the Doom 2 iWad in zDoom or better. Jumping probably required.

Being from Obake, you know it's gonna be pretty atmospheric and feature some cool new monsters; the new lanterns use sprites Obake made from scratch and I think they look pretty darn cool. It's a short map, but a lot of fun to play. If jumping is not required I couldn't figure it out, so I'd say that jumping is 100% necessary to complete this map. I loved the ending and pretty much everything else here. Give this quick beauty a shot right away!

Our next map is another short and sweet one, this time it's from Pinchy and is titled "Home Suite Home" and features music from Jimmy! You can find it here:

This runs on the Doom 2 iWad in Boom.

This map has mostly low tier enemies and comes in at just under 60 monsters, but it does has a couple little tricks up its sleeve. It is also aesthetically pleasing and simple in its design. The secret was well-done and a nice addition to the map. Good job here Pinchy and y'all make sure and give this short one a go!

We also have a few maps from Xaser coming in: "dead.wire," "Sharp Things," and "All Aboard the Mega Magilla Gorilla Flotilla!"

Doom 2 iWad, GzDoom as the source port

Ult. Doom iWad, Vanilla compatible!

Doom 2 iWad, Vanilla compatible!

Y'all know how Xaser maps by now; these things are beautiful. So hit that download button and vent the frustrations caused from work right here!

Over at the Brutal Doom FaceBook page there's a new video posted up showing tank and helicopter gameplay! Check out the video here:

Then download it and give it a shot!

One Man Doom has a couple nice reviews. One on a giant map called "Power Metal."

The other review is for a map called "Erkattanne" with some squiggly lines over those "n's" and two dots over the second "a."

Realm667 has been cranking out some reviews this week, including one on Chris Hansen's "Monument," as well as a few other really cool-looking ones and even a Heretic (yay!) one.

Go check them out now!

The Zandronum forums house something that looks really promising: a D2-crossover. If you think I'm talking about Doom 2, you're way off. Discover the mystery here:

Slade 3 has released their newest update of 3.1.1, Beta 1, which includes support for slopes in 3D mode! That's sweet! Get your update right away!

SLADE3 is a modern editor for Doom-engine based games and source ports. It has the ability to view, modify, and write many different game-specific formats, and even convert between some of them, or from/to other generic formats such as PNG.

SLADE3 can be considered a successor to both SLumpEd and SLADE - it combines the features of both, to create an all-in-one editor. Why does it keep the name of what was previously just a map editor? Because it fits :)

As with SLumpEd and previous versions of SLADE, SLADE3 is fully cross-platform. It can be run on various operating systems, including Windows, Linux and Mac OS/X. So no matter your preferred OS, SLADE3 is available for you.

DoomsDay put out a new "Stable" build on the first. Info here:

If you are unfamiliar with Doomsday, here is a description from their website:

The Doomsday Engine is a greatly enhanced DOOM source port available for Windows, Mac OS X, Ubuntu and most other Unix platforms (source code is provided).

Doomsday supports many games including the classic first-person shooters DOOM, Heretic and Hexen.

We aim to retain the original feel of the games yet leverage modern techniques and technologies, including hardware accelerated 3D graphics and client/server networking. A lot of emphasis is placed on good-looking graphics.

That's the majority of it; of course there's always tons of multiplayer stuff going on over at the Odamex, ZDaemon, and Zandronum sites so grab a friend, get yourselves over there, and put a rocket in his chest before he does it to you!

Odamex is a free, cross-platform (Mac, Windows, Linux) modification of the Doom enginethat allows players to easily join servers dedicated to playing Doom online. The goal of Odamex is to add enhancements to Doom while still retaining that "classic Doom feel" we all know and love about the original game.

The ultimate first person shooter experience, based on the original classic Doom from id Software! ZDaemon lets you play with other players just like any modern FPS, whether they're across the street or across the globe.

Zandronum is a multiplayer oriented port, based off Skulltag, for Doom and Doom II by id Software.

Zandronum brings classic Doom into the 21st century, maintaining the essence of what has made Doom great for so many years and, at the same time, adding new features to modernize it, creating a fresh, fun new experience.
