Wad Name : Escape!.wad

Author : Chris Antoni; check out my other map on wad station : Infiltration!.wad

Time to Build : 2 Weeks. I'll admit that 2 weeks is kind of quick for a map but I was off from school and had ALOT of time to kill.

Doom Port : Legacy. Didn't quite live up to my expectations. Because I wanted to do 3-D effects and a room with glass I thought this would be a good port to use. BOY WAS I WRONG! There are several areas of the map that would look 10x better with skulltag or zdoom but I wanted to put in my 3-D effects so it's a compromise between looks and cool 3-D gameplay.

The Story : Well if the title isn't enough for ya' the idea is that you and your squad have been captured by an attack group from Hell. They secretly have been waiting on Earth in an abandoned research center since the portal to their homeworld was destroyed. Your squad stumbled upon these monsters during a routine exercise and were easily captured by the enemy. Taken to the research center's basement-turned-turture-room, you and your buddies are beaten and bloodied for information. Your squad commander, before he dies, is able to secure a pistol for you from one of the guards and you quickly slip it into your boot. Suddenly one of the monsters grabs you and drags you into another room where one of your buds has been hung upsidedown. The monster begins getting some rope ready for you when you suddenly whip out your pistol and point it at the guards shocked face. As you pull the trigger you realize that you must escape and get the word out that Hell is still on Earth!

What's good about the map? :
Lighting. I found a way to create 3-D shadows on the ground using Legacy and you can see in the first room just how cool this really is! Check out the shadow of the guy who is hanging! Notice how the ceiling does not have a shadow as well? That's something you don't see in regular doom! Also, check out some of the shadows underneath the 3-D effects. Look under the arm rests of the two chairs in the first room, they actually have a shadow on the floor based on the floor lamp's beam of light.
Glass. Glass is cool so I put two sectors in with glass.
3-D Floors. 3-D is a very fun way to play doom and I put over 30 into this map! When you play this map remember that you have the power to jump, which can come in very useful to move over 3-D platforms which your opponents cannot. Also, there is a certain puzzle 1/4 of the way through the map that requires jumping from platform to platform to solve.
Game play. Although you have to fight with just a pistol for 10% of this map(I hope you're pretty good with it!) it still has everything from small claustrophobic battles to large open arena style ones with 3-D platforms to give the player an edge over his opponents. Also you will get every weapon except the BFG and it is essential that you switch between them depending on the situation. I tried to create avenues of escape or areas to hide from every trap. Usually they are nothing more than a sliver in the wall that you can squeeze into. Try using every pillar or 3-D platform as a way of hiding from enemy attacks.

What's bad about the map? :
Legacy and fighting in 3-D : Unfortuneately with legacy (I don't know how it is with other ports) fighting in 3-D can be a problem. If an enemy is directly above you on a different floor you will still auto-aim at him eventhough you can't see him. The best way to deal with this problem is to take auto-aim off. Another problem that I found is that if you look straight up or down at a unit it will dissapear. Try to avoid doing this.
Level Design : I'll admit this map was somewhat rushed. Don't get me wrong, there are no stupid errors or misaligned textures, but there is a blocky feel to it. Hopefully the game play makes up for it.
