Title : Industrial Techware Doom-Part I ver 2.0
|
DIFFICULTY RATING
While the authors text file warns about playing on Ultra Violence if you're not that good at Doom, I didn't find it to be a problem. Maybe that means I'm just good. There was a little too much empty space for my taste and the baddies were a little too easy to pick off as well as long as I found myself a good spot to hammer them from. Still, I did enjoy playing the levels so....

PLAYABILITY
The levels played out smoothly and offered enough of interest to keep my attention but again - I think (especially on ultra violence) that I should have had a more diverse set of weapons and harder badasses to contend with. I think for the average player that this 9 level replacement for Knee Deep in the dead offers a fair amount of challenge but for those players who liked playing the original Doom on Nightmare, they'll probably get bored fairly quickly. On the other hand (upside), this set of levels offers new sounds and a few new graphics. A definite plus.

LEVEL DESIGN
I had an interesting quandry while trying to decide how to rate this particular portion of the wad. On the one hand you have a varied amount of scenery in each level with characteristics in each area that make them unique yet I didn't find that attention to detail was high on the list. I particularly have a problem in any wad where doors open up into the sky. I saw that particular anomaly more than once in the levels. The levels were very "Doomish" but lacked intricacy. There weren't alot of contours in the rooms that making them lack that certain something that distinguishes the really well designed levels from the slightly better than average, which these are.

OVERALL SCORE
I think you'll enjoy these levels if you play them. I also think they're a great way to blow off a couple of hours. If you're looking for an incredibly tough play then I'd download something else but if you're just looking for an enjoyable Doom experience then you probably won't be disappointed.
Overall: 5.5
