DIFFICULTY RATING

The first level is tough, no question about it. You only have 1 weapon through most of it (pistol) and you are battling not only a ton of demons and imps but also the elements. The wind is strong (too strong I think) and while a shotgun would have been appreciated, not necessary to complete the level. I didn't actually come across that particular weapon until level 2. Overall, the difficulty seemed balanced but I felt naked with only a handgun.

PLAYABILITY

On the first level I seriously was getting pissed off. It seemed as if the author was doing it on purpose at times, using the wind to blow you off of bridges that you really needed to get to and I never did figure out what triggered the lowering of the ledge that allowed me to finally access those bridges but I must have crossed that area several times before it happened. Many fine ZDOOM tricks were used in the first level which was quite large and left me searching with nothing to kill for quite some time. Once I hit the second level I was much happier with the way things were going.

LEVEL DESIGN

Stephen made very good use of the Zdoom features available to him from slopes and wind to water and ambience sounds to go with them. The first level, again, was way to long in my opinion and left me wandering around with only speculation and a bunch of dead guys for way too long. The use of varying textures in the first level was sparse but that changed, again, when I hit the second level which looked really sweet. This is the second level I've reviewed which required me to use the newest version of Zdoom available and I'll tell ya, that port just keeps getting better.

OVERALL SCORE

While I spent a good portion of level 1 just wondering, what the fuc*? and trying to figure out how things were working and how come I had so much spare time on my hands, I was rewarded by my patience with the second level and beyond. There are some very nice uses of the zdoom engine in that first level even though it would have been nice if the author had introduced some of them more slowly throughout the group of wads but I guess he figured trial by fire. Be prepared for an experience as you fight your way through these levels. I know I've knocked level 1 several times but believe me, its worth the trip none the less. Finally - this mod was designed to replace the FOURTH episode in Ultimate Doom. If you don't have the Ultimate Doom game don't waste your time.

Overall: 7.5
